Chiropractic Care for Children

chiropractic care for children

Mount Waverley chiropractor from Waverley Chiropractic Centre shares on a recent review on chiropractic care for children. Australian chiropractors are five-year university trained, and are government registered and regulated healthcare professionals. In Australia, the chiropractic profession is well established, with over 300,000 visits to chiropractors each week. Approximately 30,000 of these visits are children under the age of 18 years.

Safer Care Victoria Review

In March 2019, the Victorian Health Minister tasked Safer Care Victoria (SCV) to lead an independent review of the practice of spinal manipulation on children under 12 years. SCV wished to hear from parents of children who have accessed chiropractic care, exploring their experiences, both positive and negative.

Of the Submissions from the Public…

  • 21,824 submissions in total – the largest of any public stakeholder engagement
  • 99.7% reported a positive experience with chiropractic care of their children
  • 98% said that chiropractic care helped their child, indicating improvement after treatment
  • 99.1% indicated they were either ‘satisfied’ or ‘very satisfied’ with information provided by the chiropractor about the benefits of treatment
  • 95.8% stated they were ‘satisfied’ or ‘very satisfied’ with the information provided about the risk of treatment
  • 68.9% reported that they had also consulted with a GP about the problem

Safety

In Australia, there has never been a serious adverse event reported in the literature or in insurance claims, involving the care of a child by a chiropractor. This is despite the fact that there have been an estimated 12-15 million visits by children to chiropractors in the last 20 years.

The evidence of harm is low because chiropractors modify their techniques to suit the age and developmental stage of the patient across the lifespan.

Evidence of Effectiveness

SCV also performed a systematic review of the evidence of effectiveness for chiropractic care of children. High level evidence does not currently exist for many commonly used paediatric health interventions, including spinal manipulation.

The situation is different for adult care, where spinal manipulation for conditions such as low back and neck pain, rate moderate to high level evidence.

Evidence was found to be positive but inconclusive for some conditions, such as colic and bed wetting. For the other conditions:

– headache, asthma, otitis media, cerebral palsy, hyperactivity, and torticollis – the SCV review found there was no high level evidence that spinal manipulation was effective for children under 12 years.

SCV recommended allocation of funding for further research that may further clarify the role chiropractors have to play with paediatric health care.

‘Get Spine Active’ this World Spine Day

world spine day

With half of Australians not sufficiently physically active, residents of Mount Waverley are being encouraged to ‘Get Spine Active’ and take control of their spinal health this World Spine Day.

Celebrated each year on 16 October, people from around the world come together to raise awareness about spinal disorders and empower others to take charge of their spinal health.

An annual initiative of the Global Alliance for Musculoskeletal Health, World Spine Day is accompanied by the 2019 theme ‘Get Spine Active’ and local chiropractor Dr Shaun Beovich from Waverley Chiropractic Centre believes there is no better time to spread this important message.

“Being physically active can greatly help your spinal health by strengthening your muscles and easing the pressure on your spine,” Dr Beovich said.

While the ‘Get Spine Active’ theme aims to focus on the benefits of exercise and daily movement for maintaining health, Dr Beovich says it’s important to think about how all daily habits can affect your spine.

“World Spine Day is a perfect opportunity to ask yourself, ‘am I making the right choices for my spinal health?’ If not, then it’s time to make those changes and if needed seek professional help to get you started.”

‘Get Spine Active’ will focus on common physical activities including running, swimming, weightlifting and cycling, with the aim of encouraging all Australians to incorporate one of these activities or other healthy habits into their everyday lives.

Other forms of physical activity can include stretching, walking and taking small breaks during your workday. To help Australians get started on improving their spinal health, the Australian Chiropractors Association has developed the Straighten Up app designed to help improve posture, with a 3-minute stretching exercise program. They have also created the Just Start Walking app to help encourage Australians to experience the benefits of walking and also allows you to track and map your walks so you can monitor your progress and improvement.

Waverley Chiropractic Centre is encouraging their community of Mt Waverley to Get Spine Active this World Spine Day and take the correct steps to improve their spinal health.

Chiropractors are well placed to assess and manage disorders of the musculoskeletal system and offer solutions and advice regarding your existing spinal health issues or how to improve your overall spinal health.

Foods that fight inflammation naturally

Inflammation is the body’s response to infection, injury or irritation. It induces redness, swelling and pain, sometimes rendering the affected area nonfunctional.

As your body heals from an acute episode of back pain, reducing inflammation is a key to a successful recovery. Dr Shaun from Waverley Chiropractic Centre says that if you choose the right anti-inflammatory foods, not only may you be able to quicken recovery but you may be able to reduce your risk of illness. Consistently pick the wrong ones, and you could accelerate the inflammatory disease process.

Foods that cause inflammation:

  • Try to avoid or limit these foods as much as possible:
  • refined carbohydrates, such as white bread and pastries
  • French fries and other fried foods
  • soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages
  • red meat (burgers, steaks) and processed meat (hot dogs, sausage)
  • margarine, shortening, and lard

The health risks of inflammatory foods
Not surprisingly, the same foods on an inflammation diet are generally considered bad for our health, including sodas and refined carbohydrates, as well as red meat and processed meats.

Some of the foods that have been associated with an increased risk for chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease are also associated with excess inflammation.

Unhealthy foods also contribute to weight gain, which is itself a risk factor for inflammation. Yet in several studies, even after researchers took obesity into account, the link between foods and inflammation remained, which suggests weight gain isn’t the sole driver.

Anti-inflammatory foods
An anti-inflammatory diet should include these foods:

  • tomatoes
  • olive oil
  • green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, kale, and collards
  • nuts like almonds and walnuts
  • fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, tuna, and sardines
  • fruits such as strawberries, blueberries, cherries, and oranges

Benefits of anti-inflammatory foods
On the flip side are beverages and foods that reduce inflammation, and with it, chronic disease. In particular fruits and vegetables such as blueberries, apples, and leafy greens that are high in natural antioxidants and polyphenols—protective compounds found in plants.

Studies have also associated nuts with reduced markers of inflammation and a lower risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Coffee, which contains polyphenols and other anti-inflammatory compounds, may protect against inflammation, as well.

Anti-inflammatory diet
To reduce levels of inflammation, aim for an overall healthy diet. If you’re looking for an eating plan that closely follows the tenets of anti-inflammatory eating, consider a diet which is high in fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, fish, and healthy oils.

In addition to lowering inflammation, a more natural, less processed diet can have noticeable effects on your physical and emotional health.

Boost your nervous system naturally

Your life is experienced through your nervous system. Think about that. Every thought, breath, heartbeat, memory, and movement happens in coordination with your central nervous system.  Researchers have found that nerve signals can travel from your brain to your body at more than 250 miles per hour. Your brain is the master control system of your body with signals and messages starting in the brain and then heading out and down to your body. But can messages travel the other way? What if I told you there are ways you can impact your brain by moving your spine? It’s true…

Why it Matters:

Top researchers have found that specific movements of the spine, including the motion that happens during a chiropractic adjustment, can provide a multitude of benefits to your brain and nervous system. Adjustments activate the nerves that detect and sense motion. When those nerves are activated, it stops (or gates) the nerves that deliver pain signals. That is one of the reasons why adjustments provide pain relief. They literally “turn off” the pain sensors! Perhaps even more exciting is the emerging research that has shown adjustments can increase cortical drive. That’s a fancy way of saying researchers have found adjustments can make you stronger!

– Your entire life is experienced through your central nervous system- every thought, memory, and action.

– Movement of your spine can activate your central nervous system and brain

– Emerging research has shown chiropractic adjustments can help reduce pain, improve function, and even increase strength!

Next Steps:

Chiropractic care has been helping people live their best life for over 100 years. Having a higher quality of life and feeling better (with less pain) are two of the most popular reasons why people seek chiropractic care. But new research into sports performance, strength, and how the adjustment can improve brain function have a lot of people excited. We would love to hear how chiropractic care has changed your life. Stop by the front desk and tell us your story today!

Top 5 Benefits of Chiropractic care

1 PAIN REDUCTION
The first benefit of chiropractic care may be the most impactful- reducing your pain. Before you are living your optimal life, you have to be free of pain.

Multiple research studies have shown that chiropractic is considered one of the most safe and effective treatments to reduce pain from your neck, low back, and more. Even if you are suffering from spinal stenosis, disc herniations, or foraminal encroachment-chiropractic may be able to help.

2 REDUCE HEADACHES
The second health benefit of chiropractic care, especially important if you have struggled with chronic headaches. Researchers have discovered that chiropractic care can reduce the frequency and intensity of headaches.

With over 20 million people suffering from headaches every day, this is a massive development in healthcare! The most common type of headaches includes; tension headaches and migraines. Tension headaches often include neck pain, muscle pain, and facial pain. Migraines are usually throbbing, can cause nausea and light sensitivity, and some even include an aura.

3 IMPROVED QUALITY OF LIFE
Many people don’t go to the doctor when they have pain. They go to the doctor when that pain interferes with their quality of life!

If you have a healthcare issue that is keeping you for enjoying your hobbies, hanging out with friends and family, and limit your ability to perform well at work- then you are likely going to start researching on Google and eventually call a doctor to get answers.

Fortunately, getting back to your active lifestyle, and improving your quality of life (or in science-speak, “functional ability”) is one proven benefits of chiropractic care.

4 REDUCED MEDICATION USE
Researchers have discovered that people who receive chiropractic care are 49% less likely to fill an opioid prescription. And, in my opinion, if we were able to reduce opioid use by nearly 50% just be helping people get well with chiropractic care- this world would be a different place!

Even what many people consider to be “safe” medications like NSAID’s contribute to over 100,000 hospitalizations, and over 3,000 deaths each year. Drugs should rarely be viewed as a first line treatment for spinal pain. Your body is designed to move and recover- so going to a doctor focused on movement and recovery seems like a good idea to not only reduce your medication use but to get the best results possible.

5 PERFORMANCE
Did you know that every major sports team in the USA has a chiropractor available to their athletes to help with injury prevention and sports performance?

That’s right, teams in the NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL all have chiropractors integrated into their healthcare team to keep their athletes performing at their top level all season long.

No one can perform their best when in pain, so chiropractors are used to keeping the athletes feeling good, but with a focus and eye towards sport-specific performance.

Chiro Can Help you Get Ready For Life

At Waverley Chiropractic Centre we want to encourage people to take control of their health, regardless of age, by making chiropractic part of their spinal healthcare regime.

Australians aged 65 and over make up 15% of the population and the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare estimates that this will increase to 22% by 2065, putting additional strain on the government to provide care for older Australians.

3.7 million Australians reported back pain in 2015 alone. Back pain can have a damaging effect on a person’s quality of life by affecting their ability to participate at work, in social activities and sports.

So here at Waverley Chiropractic we are encouraging Australians to get Ready For Life by ensuring their posture is correct, they are living active lifestyles and seeking chiropractic care where necessary.

One way to help you be Ready for Life and improve your spinal health is to get a check-up from your local ACA chiropractor. Chiropractors can also be seen as a preventative healthcare option by offering advice and assistance in making appropriate lifestyle choices and therefore reducing the risk of spinal health issues arising in the first place.

Chiropractic care is not a one size fits all healthcare option. Chiropractors carefully assess each patient individually and tailor their care accordingly. By using a variety of non-surgical techniques, such as specific spinal adjustments, manual therapy and low-force intervention, chiropractors offer a drug-free, hands-on approach to spinal healthcare.

It is important to take preventative measures when it comes to spinal health and if you are experiencing pain, it is not advisable to ignore this. Get advice from your local ACA chiropractor as early as possible.

Our bodies are designed to be healthy – to exist in a stable state of optimal function better known as homeostasis. The good news is, you can stay happy and healthy and feeling great this holiday season by integrating a few simple holiday stress busters into your routine, and while you can’t eliminate every source of stress in your life, a few smart decisions can help keep that added stress at bay and reduce your chances of getting sick.

beat holidays stress with Mt Waverley chiropractor

Fast Pain Relief

We all want pain relief as soon as possible. Whether it’s back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, headaches or arm and leg pain. No one likes being in pain. It interferes with our daily activities, our work, our play and can be quite debilitating. As your local family chiropractor at Waverley Chiropractic Centre I want to get you out of pain as quick as possible.

fast-pain-relief-mt-waverley-chiropractor

24 years of chiropractic experience tells me though that the body often needs time to heal. We live in a fast paced society where we expect quick turnarounds in most things. We don’t like waiting. Unfortunately the body is one thing that can’t be rushed. Yes you can cover up the symptoms but true healing, true health takes time. The longer a problem has been there, the older you are, previous trauma, how fit you are, how much you sit, how stressed you are etc may all impact on the time taken to heal, especially when it comes to your spine.

So can I strongly recommend we work together. It starts with having realistic expectations on the time it takes to recover from your back or neck pain. Follow the advice given, do your stretches, ice/heat etc, get enough rest/sleep, keep moving as much as possible and keep your chiropractic appointments. Allow time for your body to recover, to heal. And as we get you out of pain we want to move towards a state of wellness. Where your spine, and in particular your nervous system is functioning to its peak.

If you are in pain now then give chiropractic a try. Family chiropractor Dr Shaun Beovich is experienced in dealing with many of your aches and pains. Waverley Chiropractic Centre services the Mt Waverley, Glen Waverley, Burwood, Chadstone, Clayton, Ashwood and surrounding areas. Book online here or call 9581 2624.

Prevent Back Pain – Love Your Spine

‘Love Your Spine’ this World Spine Day

Prevent back Pain – Love Your Spine. Every year, people from around the world come together on World Spine Day (an initiative of the Global Alliance for Musculoskeletal Health) to raise awareness about spinal disorders and empower others to take charge of their spinal health.

Our increasingly sedentary lifestyle is having a profound negative impact on our health and especially our spines. Back pain and other musculoskeletal disorders are on the rise and Australians of all ages are suffering. The good news is that it is possible to prevent such spinal health issues without the need for drastic measures.

The theme for World Spine Day this year is ‘Love your Spine’, emphasising the importance of looking after your spine and taking steps to prevent spinal disorders. Regular physical activity, good posture, lifting safely, healthy working conditions and lifestyle adjustments can improve spinal health and overall wellbeing.

Staying active helps spinal tissues and muscles stay healthy and eases the pressure on the spine. Whether it’s walking, running, swimming or taking regular breaks from sitting, Australians are encouraged to incorporate physical activity into their daily routines. Good posture also plays an integral role in optimal spinal health, as it allows the spine to be correctly aligned and reduces the amount of strain on the body.

Ways to ‘Love Your Spine’ this World Spine Day:

  • Be mindful of your posture
  • Practise responsible lifting
  • Get moving and stay active
  • Download the Straighten Up app

The Australian Chiropractors Association has developed the Straighten Up Australia app to help you stay active, improve your posture and enhance spinal health. The app has posture reminders, a daily exercise program, and other helpful resources to assist Australians in taking control of their health.

Most people underestimate the positive effects that simple lifestyle changes can have on spinal health. World Spine Day is a great opportunity to assess your activity levels, posture and other lifestyle choices, and make adjustments accordingly.
